The point of this survey is to notice whether your mind is distracted or present, and whether you're getting hooked onto a train of thoughts, especially those that are negative.

When we engage in the practice of mindfulness, we are training the two things we need for mental agility:

to be able to sustain our focus on one thing. From a neurological perspective, when we pay attention to the breath for example, we are activating the prefrontal cortex – just behind the forehead
at some point, your mind wanders off – the default network that is activated. Basically attention deficit trait. You're distracted. If you become aware and notice you’ve become distracted you are strengthening the ability to observe your own experience.

Every time that you go through that loop, your prefrontal cortex is strengthened, and that's a good thing. Your ability to focus starts to improve so that you can pay attention, be present, be attentive. The other thing is what the researchers call executive functioning — your ability, moment to moment, deliberately to choose your words, your thoughts, and your behavior.

So basically, this practice allows you to be the better version of yourself, the one that is more in control of what you do and say and think — basically self-awareness and self-management (or self-regulation). And what researchers have found is that eight weeks of the practicing this just ten minutes a day, results in the prefrontal cortex getting thicker.
